What Is Phonetics?

Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that studies the sounds of human speech. It examines how speech sounds are produced (articulatory), transmitted (acoustic), and perceived (auditory).

Unlike phonology—which deals with how sounds function within a particular language—phonetics is concerned with the physical properties of sounds themselves.

Three Main Branches of Phonetics

• Articulatory Phonetics: How speech sounds are made using the vocal tract (e.g., lips, tongue, vocal cords).
• Acoustic Phonetics: The physical properties of speech as sound waves in the air.
• Auditory Phonetics: How listeners perceive and interpret speech sounds.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

The IPA is a standardized system used by phoneticians to represent the sounds of spoken language. It allows precise transcription across all languages.
